Pretty in pink

Favorite place ever!

I know I've blogged about Long Beach, Kommetjie and what a lovely beach it is, but my heart will always belong to Fish Hoek Beach. I grew up here and it's just the best beach ever. Yes, it gets crowded in the summer, but I LOVE it! The soft sand is a beautiful bright white and the water is so warm. I like to get down there very early in the morning and can easily spend the entire day there. I make sure I have my beach umbrella and a few snacks. And lots of sunblock. You see those houses up on the mountainside, well, I hope to retire somewhere there one day. I can dream, can't I?

Shop Local

One of my favourite recent local finds is Sugar and Vice, a homewares, textiles and ceramics business run by a lovely lady, Natalie Vice. I bought a few small gifts last month and the packaging was every bit as lovely as the gifts inside. I will definitely be ordering again soon. Pop over to her online shop and have a browse around. (International customers welcome).

I downloaded this pretty desktop wallpaper, which is available to newsletter subscribers. Enjoy!

Oh Monday...

Most of us approach Monday with a bit of caution and some hesitation and I think this photo sums it up perfectly.  How do you ease into your Monday? Slow and steady, or do you hit the ground running?

Long Beach, Kommetjie

We had quite a stressful week last week, but fortunately by Friday the crises was averted and after a crazy early start (3.45am) on Saturday, we were able to get down to Long Beach, Kommetjie for a walk again. I hope to make a habit of this.

I wrote about it being on our doorstep last week and you can read about it here.

It was a bit windier on Saturday and there were more surfers than last weekend. We watched some people flying their kites (some not so successfully), kids running in and out of the surf and a group of boys body boarding. They kept getting dumped by the waves, but seemed to be enjoying themselves. Long Beach is also very popular with dog owners, so there were plenty of dogs chasing balls and sticks. It really is a beautiful beach, so if you're ever in the deep south make sure to head down to Long Beach for a stroll. You wont be sorry.

Later we got some fish and chips and headed home for an early night. It was a good way to end off our Saturday.

The commuter and the book

With all the technology, devices and gadgets available out there, you would think that things like books and newspapers would feature a lot less in people’s lives.

Well, I still see a lot of people reading a good old fashioned book on the train. A few have switched to Kindles and e-readers, but some people just enjoy the feel of a real book in their hands.

I love books and own a Kindle, but haven’t actually read anything on it in a while. I also have a small pile of books next to my bed that I need to carry on reading. My mistake was starting on more than one at a time… (I’m also completely distracted by Netflix and Showmax lately) I tried to start a small book club in my neighbourhood, but sadly it didn't take off. We only had two gatherings and then it went quiet. Might try and revive it this year.

What are your favourite type of books? Crime, romance, classic novels, mystery, autobiographies?
Do you have a favourite author?

A few of my favourite authors are Karin SlaughterMark Billingham and Mo Hayder.

I snapped this commuter’s photo yesterday and she seemed quite engrossed in her book.

The Everyday Commute

The college student, the elderly lady, the scholars, the couples, young, old, the tourists, the homeless, the buskers, the evangelical preachers, nurses, teachers, single parents, we are all part of the everyday commute. People can be funny, happy, loud, overbearing ,sometimes smelly, sometimes annoying, tired, angry, lonely, rude, in love, sad, crazy, lost, dirty, sometimes even scary, mostly the same, yet always unique. The Everyday Commute.

On my doorstep

I love the beach!

But in reality I only have eyes for Fish Hoek Beach. It's a problem as I don't give any other beaches a chance. I love going down there early in the morning and getting a good spot to camp out for the day. I'm armed with my umbrella, towel, sunblock and snacks. I mostly go alone and just enjoy my own company while I watch all the other beach goers.

We live really close to Long Beach in Kommetjie, but I hardly ever go there. Ok, almost never. I grew up in the valley and actually spent quite a bit of time on Long Beach as a teenager, mostly watching the surfers. It's a very popular surfing beach and a lot of international surfing competitions are held there, but mostly in winter.

Today Jacques suggested that we go for a walk on the beach and I was like, ok let's go to Fish Hoek Beach, but he wanted to go to Long Beach. So, off we went.  The tide was low, the waves were small, people were walking their dogs and a few kids were surfing. We ended up staying for ages and decided that we will definitely be doing this more often. I collected some shells and took a few photos with my phone. Need to remember to take the big girl camera next time.

And this is literally on my doorstep...

I feel like I'm on a huge learning curve.

I've just added my blog to Bloglovin" so feel free to follow The Everyday Commute from there.

Are there any hard and fast rules with blogging?
I'm still finding out and probably making classic "new blogger" mistakes.

Just bear with me....

Things I want to remember

Today marked the first day of the new school year for public schools in South Africa. The holidays have gone by in a whizz and we are ready for some "normality" that the school year brings.

Tristan is starting his final year of secondary school and it's going to go by so fast. So many activities and events are lined up for this year. Orange River rafting, hockey tour, matric dance, drivers licence and probably some other things I can't remember right now. Its all going to be quite exciting!

Also, these are the LAST back to school photos I'm going to have of him!.

I did it

I did it, I finally started a blog. A real blog, with words and everything.
I'm not even sure what I'm doing and how I'm going to do it. Will I even have the time and energy to keep it alive?
I hope so.
For now it's going to be another place to share my daily life, mostly commuting photos, but hopefully more than that. Let's see where this journey takes me.
I also took the first Everyday Commute photo for 2017 this morning.
You can see more of these on my Instagram account.
